Prepping for a Photoshoot: a story in 5 photos

In my spare time, I work as a copy editor for a student led fashion magazine based at Texas State University. I captured them preparing for a shoot in this photo series.

Work the room: for this wide shot of the team preparing, I stood on top of a couch in the middle of the room. (Photo credit: Wesley Ferrell)
Rule of thirds: In this medium shot of Sydney (center) showing a makeup artist inspiration for a makeup look, the rule of thirds is used to draw attention to both the makeup artist as well as the computer screen. (Photo credit: Wesley Ferrell)
Capture a moment: In this medium shot of an artist and her model, we can see them lock eyes. The expression on the model’s face shows confidence in her makeup artist’s abilities. (Photo credit: Wesley Ferrell)
Work with light: Here’s another model-artist team working on a purple look in this tight shot. There are multiple sources of light in this photo, like the warm incandescent bulbs lighting the room in contrast with the bright light coming through the windows. The light from outside separates the subjects from the background. (Photo credit: Wesley Ferrell)
Shoot with depth: This medium shot of a stylist explaining her choices for her model focuses on the video captured by the phone recording the interview. (Photo credit: Wesley Ferrell)

Something I’m proud of was my ability to create a storyline out of just the preparation for the shoot. I had to work within time constraints because I was scheduled to work during the actual shoot on location in Wimberly. In a perfect world the story would have ended with the culmination of everyone’s preparations, but I think the narrative is still cohesive regardless. Aside from time, another struggle I had was getting the shot with depth. I used photoshop to create the illusion of depth for that one.
